Mumbai: Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, who turned into a ‘messiah’ for stranded migrant workers during the lockdown, has reportedly mortgaged eight properties to raise Rs 10 crore for helping people in distress.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, Moneycontrol got access to some documents that reveal that Sonu had signed the loan agreement on September 15 and it was registered on November 24.
Reportedly, the actor has mortgaged two shops and six flats located in Juhu, Mumbai to raise the fund.
“Such a philanthropic gesture is unheard of. While these premium properties will continue to be owned by the actor and his wife and would continue to receive a monthly rental, they may have to pay interest and principal against the Rs 10 crore loan,” Ritesh Mehta, Senior Director & Head – West India, Residential Services, JLL India was quoted as saying in the report.
During the nationwide lockdown, Sonu had arranged transportation for ferrying the scores of stranded migrant workers home.
He had also donated PPE kits to the people in need.
“1137. mails 19000. fb messages 4812. Insta messages, 6741. twitter messages, Today’s HELP messages. On an average these are the number of requests I get for HELP. It is humanly impossible to reach out to everyone. I still try my best. Apologies if I missed your message,” the actor had tweeted in August.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) had honoured him with the prestigious SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award for his selfless service.
