Micro Raman Spectrometer Inaugurated At Utkal University

Bhubaneswar: Vice-chairman of the Higher Education Council Prof Ashok Das on Friday inaugurated a Micro Raman Spectrometer at Utkal University here, on the occasion of National Science Day.

Funded by Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), the Rs 1.5 crore spectrometer named after eminent Indian Physicists and Nobel laureate CV Raman is used to determine the vibration modes of molecules.

Speaking on the occasion, Head of the Department of Physics, Dr Prafulla Kumar Panda said that the Micro Raman spectroscopy uses a specialized Raman spectrometer to measure the Raman spectra of microscopic samples. The system consists of a Raman spectrometer integrated with a Raman microscope.  Lasers of different wavelengths are used to excite a microscopic sample to detect and analyze the vibrational spectra. “This instrument can be used for research in the field of physics, chemistry and biological sciences for characterization of the material, diagnosis of disease, detection of explosive and to generate a fingerprint of the universe,” he added.

Among others, Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University Prof Soumendra Mohan Patnaik was present.

The National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by CV Raman in 1928.

This year’s theme is ‘Women in Science’.
