Berhampur: Police have arrested a former mill worker for masquerading as a doctor and running a clinic for three years in Ganjam district.
Police didn’t identify the accused except that he was a 45-year-old man who ran the clinic with a four-bed indoor facility at Kumpapada village in Jagannath Prasad block.
Several medicines and basic medical equipment worth over Rs 1 lakh were also seized during a search operation at the clinic, police said.
According to police, over 100 patients used to visit the clinic for treatment every day and the accused used to issue prescriptions to them in the name of Dr Lal.
During interrogation, the accused confessed that he had studied till Class VIII and was previously engaged as a labourer in a textile mill in Surat, Gujarat.
The fake doctor also revealed that he only dealt with patients with minor ailments and had referred several critical cases to hospitals in Berhampur as well as other cities in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Police said they have registered a case against the accused and further investigation is on.
