R.Udaygiri: A minor died after her sister’s brother-in-law reportedly raped her in R.Udaygiri in the Gajapati district of Odisha on Monday. The body of the victim was sent for postmortem, while police arrested the accused was arrested held from Lubursing village.
As the news spread, villagers of Tangiasahi burnt tyres and staged a road blockade by placing the body on the road demanding strict punishment for the accused and compensation to the victim’s family. The roadblock continued for over two hours and was lifted after the police assured necessary action in the matter.
According to reports, the victim hails from Tangiasahi of Randiba panchayat. She had gone to visit her sister some 18 days back. Soon after she returned home, the victim’s family found she was suffering from internal bleeding, Initially, her family admitted the victim to Chandragiri hospital and when her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the MKCG in Berhampur, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Her parents claimed that the victim had revealed that she had been raped and also named the accused. “My daughter had gone to our elder daughter’s in-laws’ place in Lubursing and stayed there for 18 days on the insistence of the family,” said Laxmi Dalei, the mother of the deceased.
Laxmi Dalei further said, “When we went to get our daughter home, we found that she had been beaten up. On returning home, she had a recurrent fever and so we took her to a hospital in Chandragiri. Doctors there said she suffered from internal bleeding and shifted her to Berhampur hospital.”
“Our daughter revealed that she was raped. She concealed the matted out of fear that my elder daughter will be tortured by her in-laws. She, however, revealed the truth before passing away,” said Laxmi.
