New Delhi: When you look at Harnaaz Sandhu and hear her speak, you cannot but admire the beauty with brains.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Miss Universe 2021 doesn’t have any problem in life.
The Chandigarh-based Harnaaz, who has been speaking about women’s rights at different events, recently revealed that she is suffering from celiac disease, PTI reported.
Very few have heard of this rare medical condition.
Celiac disease is an immune disorder, that is, the person’s own immune system works against the body. And it’s triggered by food containing gluten.
Celiac disease can lead to malnourishment, loss of bone density, fertility issues, neurological diseases and, sometimes, even cancer.
It’s a condition that could result in weight gain as well as loss of weight, besides long-term digestive issues.
According to National Health Service, UK, celiac disease can also cause complications like anaemia and weakening of bones.
The 22-year Harnaaz, who last December became the third Indian to win the Miss Universe pageant, then spoke about her personal struggles as a woman.
“I’m one of those individuals who was first bullied about being ‘too skinny’.. and now they bully me saying ‘she’s fat’,” she said at an event in Chandigarh.
“Nobody knows about my Celiac disease… That I can’t eat wheat flour and many other things.”
Despite being body-shamed, Harnaaz said one needs to be positive.
“I am one of the courageous and confident girls who believes even if I’m fat, even if I’m thin, it’s my body, I love myself,” she said.
