MLA Mohammad Moquim Appeals To Govt To Roll Back Decision On Demolishing Barabati Stadium In Cuttack
Cuttack: Congress MLA Mohammad Moquim on Friday appealed to Odisha government to roll back its decision on demolishing Barabati Stadium in Cuttack under its transformation plan.
Speaking to media persons here, Moquim said Barabati Stadium holds historical significance for Odisha. “Several eminent personalities of the state including Biju Patnaik, Harekrushna Mahatab, former Governor Asaf Ali had contributed towards construction of the stadium. The stadium has earned an identity for Odisha in international fora,” he said.
He further said Barabati is a symbol of pride of all Odias. “As a representative of the area, I can say that the government decision has hurt the sentiments of the people,” he added.
Appealing to the government to refrain from demolishing the iconic stadium, the MLA said the government can take up its renovation in a grand way. He cited the examples of Eden Garden in Kolkata and Arun Jaitley Stadium which have been renovated and expanded to host international sports events.
“All the commercial establishments and activities on the premises of the stadium should be stopped. The government should focus on using the stadium for promotion of sports activities only,” he added.
The Congress leader suggested that in case of space constraint, the government can go for construction of a new stadium of international standard anywhere between twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
It may be noted that Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) secretary Sanjay Behera had said Barabati Stadium will be completely demolished for executing the transformation plan after the visit of 5T chairman VK Pandian on February 21.
