Washington: Moderna Inc.’s vaccine has been found to be safe and effective, US regulators reportedly said.
The staff of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a report on Tuesday that the experimental vaccine is 94.1 per cent effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19.
The final FDA decision will be taken on Thursday.
The vaccine is 86.4 per cent effective in people aged 65 and above. Both Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are mRNA-based and require two-doses. The US has mobilised mass vaccinations and 20 million people are expected to get the first shots by the month-end. Authorities will be on the lookout for side effects such as allergies which prompted the UK government to stop giving it to people with severe allergies.
Moderna’s vaccine has not been approved by any country yet.
Moderna’s vaccines can, however, be stored in traditional cold storage unlike Pfizer’s which require ultra cold storages.
