New Delhi: After weeks of tension amid the stiff tariffs imposed on Indian goods by the US, President Donald Trump sought to ease the situation by stating there was nothing to worry about Indo-US ties and that he will always be friends with Narendra Modi.
The Indian Prime Minister “deeply appreciated and fully reciprocated” Trump’s sentiments.
But this display of Modi and Trump professing mutual and lasting friendship has not impressed Mallikarjun Kharge.
The Congress president said on Sunday that he doesn’t give too much importance to what the two leaders said recently, adding that PM Modi has become “an enemy of the nation” by “spoiling the atmosphere.”
“Trump and Modi can be friends, but Modi has become an enemy of the nation. He spoiled the atmosphere… Trump imposed a huge tariff. After a 50 per cent tariff, he destroyed our people,” Kharge said in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi, reported PTI.
“The nation comes first and your friendship is secondary,” Kharge added, according to PTI.
The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said Modi and Trump could be good to each other “because they sought votes for one another”, but alleged the Modi-Trump alliance had come at India’s cost.
Kharge made the point that Modi “needs to realise” India has a foreign policy rooted in neutrality for decades, “and it should continue on that path”.
