Dubai: Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi, reportedly handed over the Asia Cup trophy to the UAE Board officials before flying back to Lahore.
It is currently at the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) regional office in Dubai. The silverware and the winners’ medals, which were not presented to the Indian cricket team at the Dubai International Stadium after they defeated Pakistan in the final on Sunday, will either be officially sent to India or collected by an Indian official in Dubai, CNN-News18 reported, quoting sources.
Though Naqvi had apologised to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the chaotic post-final trophy fiasco in which he initially denied the Indian team the chance to celebrate their victory on the field with the winner’s trophy, the standoff over the trophy continued during the ACC meeting on Tuesday with him avoiding a discussion on it.
However, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla reminded everyone that the trophy is not Naqvi’s property, but that of ACC. He further stated that the ACC must ensure the Asia Cup is handed to India in an appropriate manner.
It was also reported that the BCCI was mulling to escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) amid the uncertainty.
The drama started after India fought their way to a 5-wicket win against Pakistan in the finals of the Asia Cup 2025. The Indian team refused to receive the trophy from Naqvi, who was equally adamant and stubborn. Naqvi reportedly left the stadium for his hotel, taking the trophy and medals with him after presenting Pakistan players the runners-up medals.
The men in blue did celebrate, but without the trophy.
