Bhubaneswar: Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into some parts of northwest Bay of Bengal, some more parts of northeast and east-central Bay of Bengal and most parts of Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland, the India Meteorological Department informed on Thursday.
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon into some more parts of Central and North Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of northeastern states and some parts of Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 2 days,” it added.
The MeT office has forecast heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim due to cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal in mid-tropospheric levels and strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India at lower tropospheric levels.
Senior meteorologist Jason Nicholla said that monsoon has reached parts of Mizoram and Manipur. “Conditions are favourable for advance over more parts of northeast India and perhaps into sub-Himalayan WestBengal during the next couple of days,” he tweeted.
He further said that monsoon can reach eastern Nepal this weekend, then Mumbai and Odisha early next week.
Monsoon usually takes 10 to 12 days to arrive in Odisha after hitting the Kerala coast, which saw the onset on May 29 three days ahead of the schedule. In 2021, monsoon arrived in the state on its normal onset date – June 10.
Notably, the IMD has forecast isolated/scattered rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds for Odisha during the next 5 days. There will be little change in the daytime temperature during the next four to five days.
