New Delhi: The troubles keep mounting for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Hours after granting permission to the INDIA bloc for a rally at Ramlila Maidan to protest against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday sanctioned a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry against jailed AAP leader Satyendar Jain under Prevention of Corruption (PoC) Act.

The probe pertains to allegations of extorting Rs 10 crore from conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who is lodged in Tihar Jail, ANI reported quoting government sources.

AAP leader and former Delhi Health minister Jain and ex-Tihar Jail DG Sandeep Goel were accused of running an extortion racket and demanding protection money from high-profile inmates.

Earlier this month, Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena sanctioned a CBI inquiry into extortion charges against Jain.

Jain, arrested in May 2022 under Prevention of Money Laundering Act, was granted an interim medical bail on May 26, 2023 after he fell in the jail bathroom.

The Supreme Court, dismissing his previous regular bail plea in March this year, asked Jain to surrender in connection with the money-laundering case.

Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in a money-laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy.

Former deputy CM Manish Sisodia is also in jail.
