Berhampur: A nursing home proprietor has been arrested in Odisha’s Ganjam for allegedly conducting a delivery without any medical qualification, leading to the death of both the mother and her newborn.

The arrested has been identified as Mangulu Charan Pradhan (35), a resident of Dengausta.

According to sources, he conducted the botched up delivery inside his nursing home on May 11 along with two auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs). No registered medical practitioner was present at the time of the procedure.

Pradhan was arrested from his village on the basis of a complaint lodged by the deceased woman’s husband, Babu Nayak, a native of Korakhandi. The two ANMs – Madhusmita Pattanayak and Pramodini Gamango – were earlier arrested on May 19 and August 10, respectively, according to police.

Roji Nayak was admitted to the nursing home on May 11 after her family was assured that it was fully equipped for a safe delivery. “After four hours of labour, the delivery was conducted by the accused without any qualified doctor present. The newborn was declared dead shortly after birth, and Roji herself died en route to MKCG Medical College and Hospital,” a police officer told PTI.
