Angul: In a significant breakthrough, Angul Police have busted a cyber crime gang which had been defrauding several people.
Police, while investigating a Rs 52-lakh fraud case on the complaint of a local businessman, unearthed a five-member gang.
According to Angul SP Rahul Jain, three of the accused were arrested from Soro in Balasore district, and one each from Bhadrak and Darjeeling, in West Bengal.
The gang’s modus operandi was luring victims – comprising of businessmen, retired officials, bank employees and senior citizens — by promising high returns through a fraudulent trading app. Once the scamsters succeeded in convincing the victims, they were duped of large sums of money.
Police recovered Rs 2.28 lakh in cash, a luxury car, several bank passbooks and cheque books, a Rolex watch and gold chain.
The gang operated not just in Odisha, but was operational in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu as well, said the SP.
