Berhampur: A man, accused in a murder committed in Gujarat 21 years back, was arrested from Odisha’s Ganjam district on Saturday.
The man, identified as Shankar Behera of Baunsia village under Kabisuryanagar police station in the district, was working in Surat of Gujarat in 2001. At the time, a murder case was registered at Pandesar police station in Surat and Shankar was named as the accused.
Before police could arrest Shankar, he managed to escape from there. Instead of going to his house in Baunsia, he went to his in-laws’ house in Purusottampur town and continued to lead a normal life there.
After all these years, Pandesar police came to know the whereabout of Shankar from reliable sources and contacted Purusottampur police for help in tracing him. On Saturday morning, a police team from Pandesar along with their local counterparts went to Purusottampur and arrested him.
Confirming Shankar’s arrest, IIC of Purusottampur police station Priyas Ranjan Chhotray said official process is going on to enable Pandesar police to take him on remand to Surat.
