Naypyidaw: Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior functionaries of the ruling party were detained in early morning raid, according to the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) spokesperson on Monday. The Military announced a one-year state of emergency and appointed a general as acting president.

This was warranted after tension escalated between the civilian government and the powerful military that raised fear of a coup after army said that the election was fraudulent, reported news agency Reuters.

Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been “taken” in the early hours of the morning, NLD spokesman Myo Nyunt confirmed to Reuters over phone.

“I want to tell our people not to respond rashly and I want them to act according to the law,” he said while expecting to be arrested.

Phone lines to capital Naypyitaw could not be reached in the early hours of Monday. Parliament had been due to start sitting there on Monday after a November election the NLD had won in a landslide.

A military spokesman also did not answer phone calls from the agency seeking comment.
