Balangir: Two persons died and four others sustained critical injuries after allegedly being attacked by a rabid dog at a village in Tushura area of Odisha’s Balangir district.
As per information, the incident took place at Chinchera village under the jurisdiction of Tushura police station in the district.
The victims have been identified as 33-year-old national-level para-athlete Jogendra Chhatria, and 48-year-old Hrushikesh Rana. The two died late on Saturday while undergoing treatment at VIMSAR in Burla, sources said.
Locals said the incident took place on July 23, when a rabid dog went on a rampage in Chinchera and attacked six villagers in separate incidents. Panic spread through the locality as the animal bit people without provocation, leaving several grievously injured.
Six victims, including children, were initially rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Balangir and later referred to Burla for advanced treatment.
While four of the victims recovered after treatment and returned home, Chhatria and Rana’s condition remained critical despite continued medical care. Hospital authorities declared both dead late on Saturday.
Chhatria was a known figure in the region for his achievements in para-athletics at the national level.
