Bhubaneswar: A day after announcing COVID assistance and accident compensation for newspaper hawkers in the state, chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday sanctioned financial assistance for streets vendors.

Announcing that the government would play Rs 3,000 to each of 1.01 lakh street vendors of 114 towns, the chief minister in a video conference said it aims securing their livelihood. The vendors had received Rs 6000 in two phases in March 2020 and June 2021.

Appreciating the role of the street vendors in the economy of a city, he said he could realise the problem faced by them due to the COVID pandemic and hence was extending the financial assistance.

Naveen also announced the government would set up vending zones in 87 urban areas of the state at a cost of Rs 60 crore.

It may be noted that the chief minister had on Thursday said the government would pay Rs 6,000 special COVID assistance to each newspaper hawker. Earlier, he had announced livelihood assistance for BSKY card holders, house repair money for poor and needy and several initiatives for Mission Shakti members.
