Bonai/Sundargarh: In a case of gross medical negligence, a four-year-old girl suffering from fever was allegedly administered anti-rabies vaccine at Bonai sub-divisional hospital in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
According to sources, a woman, Chinmayee Jena from Kodia, brought her daughter to the hospital for treatment on July 29. The doctor of the paediatric department Likichand Mohapatra prescribed an anti-rabies vaccine (ARV). At the hospital’s pharmacy, the staff enquired if the child was bitten by a dog. Though Chinmayee replied in negative, they went ahead and administered the ARV.
As there was no improvement in her condition, she took her daughter to the hospital again only to be told about the medication error. “The doctor assured us that there was nothing to worry. He changed the prescription and also advised us to take two more doses of the ARV,” Chinmayee told the media.
She claimed that error might have taken place since he was checking another patient at the same time.
While it is being alleged that the doctor tore up the original prescription to conceal the medication error, he told a local channel that the injection was part of routine immunisation. “I conducted a thorough check up of the patient last evening. The fever is not going down as she has chicken pox,” he asserted.
