New Delhi: Bhim Mahabahadur Jora (30), a criminal from Nepal, involved in multiple serious crimes, was shot dead in a police encounter at the Astha Kunj Park near Nehru Place in New Delhi.
According to officials, the operation was conducted by the Gurugram Crime Branch (Sector 43) and Delhi Police’s Special Staff late on Monday night. Inspector Narendra Sharma of the Sector 43 Crime Branch led the action.
“Acting on a specific tip-off about Jora’s presence in Astha Kunj Park with an associate, the joint police teams surrounded the area. Upon spotting the police, Jora opened indiscriminate fire while attempting to flee. Inspector Sharma was hit by a bullet on his bulletproof jacket,” an official said.
“Despite repeated warnings to surrender, Jora continued firing. He sustained severe injuries during retaliatory fire and was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he died. His associate escaped under the cover of darkness,” he added.
The criminal, who carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, was wanted in cases including murder, dacoity, and a recent Rs 20 lakh burglary at a BJP functionary’s residence in Gurugram, Haryana. The police claim to have seized a sophisticated automatic pistol, a live round, several empty cartridges, and a bag containing housebreaking tools from the site of the encounter.
Jora was allegedly the kingpin of a transnational dacoity and theft syndicate. He had been absconding for nearly 17 months for his role in the brutal murder of 63-year-old Dr Yogesh Chandra Paul in Jangpura, New Delhi, during a robbery in May 2024. Jora and five accomplices had killed the doctor. Four of his co-accused were arrested earlier.
The gangster apparently ran a structured gang, infiltrating Indian cities using fake Aadhaar cards. Members, mostly Nepali men and women posing as domestic help, executed planned robberies in Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Surat. They would drug residents or hold them hostage before fleeing to Nepal with looted valuables.
