Bhubaneswar: The body of the 20-year-old Nepali student, who died allegedly by suicide in a hostel of the KIIT deemed to be University in Odisha capital, was handed over to her family members after a post-mortem at the AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The family members of the deceased Prakriti Lamsal took the body to Nepal for the final rites after receiving it late on Tuesday. She was a third-year Computer Science student at the educational institution.
It may be noted that Prakriti reportedly took the extreme step after allegedly being harassed by a third-year Mechanical engineering student of the same university. The accused, Advik Srivastava, was arrested by the Commissionerate Police from Bhubaneswar airport on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, palpable tension continued outside the university campus as students staged a silent protest demanding justice for the bereaved family.
The Odisha government on Tuesday constituted a fact-finding committee to determine the circumstances that led to Prakriti’s death in KIIT hostel and what prompted the institute to issue suspension letters to students who were seeking justice.
The three-member panel will also probe why authorities of the institute did not inform the state government about its action against the students from the Himalayan kingdom.
The panel is headed by the additional chief secretary (Home). The other members are secretaries of the higher education and women and child development departments.
In another development, three employees of the education institute and two security guards, who were arrested for their alleged rough and inappropriate behaviour towards the agitating students, were granted bail by a local court.
The five arrested persons were identified as KIIT University Director General (HR) Sibananda Mishra (59), Director (Administration) Pratap Kumar Champaty (51), Hostel Director Sudhir Kumar Rath (59), and security guards Ramakanta Nayak (45) and Jogendra Behera (25).
