London: No sooner was Rishi Sunak declared the new leader of Conservative Party, and therefore the UK’s next Prime Minister, than netizens flooded social media with their thoughts and observations on this historic development.
The third British Prime Minister in seven months, Sunak is the first British-Asian and the first Hindu to hold the coveted post.
And at 42 years of age, the former Chancellor is the youngest PM of modern times, following a meteoric rise in politics.
Twitteratti didn’t miss the chance to point out that Britain, which had ruled our country for nearly 200 years, will now be ruled by a person of Indian origin.
Many also welcomed Diwali gifts on back-to-back days – Team India’s sensational and dramatic last-ball victory over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup on Saturday and now Sunak’s elevation as UK’s Prime Minister.
From ‘Diwali gift kal bhi aur aaj bhi… Feeling proud,’ to ‘Soon UK will get a Made in India PM’, ‘Britishers ruled India.. Now it’s the time an Indian will rule them’, here are some of the reactions:
