New Lease Of Life: COVID-Hit Odisha Youth Undergoes Lung Transplant

Bhubaneswar: After a marathon operation lasting 19 hours, Odisha’s Amrit Pradhan, an engineer whose lungs were severely damaged due to COVID-19, underwent a successful lung transplant at a hospital in Chennai.

Pradhan was airlifted from AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, to Apollo hospital in Chennai on June 4.

Pradhan, a native of Berhampur, was admitted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, on May 2. He was shifted to Apollo hospital in Chennai for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment in June.

After his condition did not improve, doctors suggested a lung transplant surgery. According to sources, the donor was a youth who had been admitted to Apollo hospital in Chennai after falling from the roof of his house. He eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Pradhan’s treatment cost nearly Rs 2.5 crore. His family collected about Rs 1.5 crore through crowdfunding.

Pradhan, a resident of Basudev Nagar area in Berhampur, is an engineer by profession. He along with his other family members contracted COVID-19 in May. He had developed pneumonia and septicaemia in the lungs.
