Baripada: Acting swiftly, police rescued a newborn boy allegedly stolen from Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Baripada within ten hours.
Sources said Baripada Town police rescued the baby handed him over to his mother at the hospital on Saturday.
A woman, identified as Parvati Hembram, has been taken into custody for allegedly stealing the newborn boy from the hospital. A police team apprehended her from a place under the Baishinga Police Station limits.
However, it is not clear as to why she stole the newborn. Further investigation in the case is underway.
Notably, the newborn was stolen from the hospital prompting the medical authorities and local police to initiate a search operation.
As per information, Dhanai Hansda of Ranibhol village under Baripada Sadar police station called an ambulance to take his wife Phulmani Soren to the hospital the previous day after she complained of labour pain. However, she gave birth to a baby boy on the way to the hospital. She was later admitted to the hospital in Baripada.
Meanwhile, an unknown woman who was present at the hospital started mingling with Dhanai and his wife. At around 6 am on Saturday, the woman reportedly called Dhanai to apply for financial assistance provided by government for the delivery. When Dhanai went with the baby to apply, the woman allegedly took advantage of the situation and quickly disappeared with the baby on the pretext of helping the couple.
After failing to find the baby, the family members lodged a complaint with the Baripada Town police, who have launched an investigation into the matter and nabbed the accused woman after examining the CCTV footage.
