Berhampur: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought final report on mysterious death of a college student from Odisha’s Ganjam SP and School and Mass Education department.
As per reports, the victim girl, Diptilata Das, was studying in Plus II Science in a private educational institution at Ankoli under Baidyanathpur police station in Ganjam district. She was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the college hostel on November 13, 2022.
Diptilata’s mother Jyotsnarani Das, who was told about her daughter’s death by another college student. As the college authorities did not inform Jyotsnarani anything, she suspected something foul in the incident. J
Jyotsnarani claimed that Diptilata had told her about harassment by some college students. Diptilata had also informed her mother that she was getting threatening messages on her social media account. Though she had informed the college authorities about it, no step was taken in this regard.
Following Diptilata’s death, her mother had filed a complaint at Baidyanathpur police station.
Suspecting that Diptilata was a victim of ragging, a social activist of Berhampur filed a petition at NHRC seeking its intervention in the matter. The Commission had sought the action taken report (ATR) from Ganjam district collector and SP which the latter complied withing the deadline.
In its latest order, the NHRC has sought final report on the case from the SP and secretary, School and Mass Education department. The officers have been asked to file the report by May 21.
