Bhubaneswar: A student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela was killed and another critically injured in a road mishap in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Karthikeyan Senthil Krishnan, a BTech second year student. Another BTech student, identified as Vasanti Karthik Narayan, sustained grievous injuries in the mishap.
As per information, 16 students from NIT Rourkela were travelling on two=wheelers to visit the scenic Khandadhar waterfall. Near Samar Dari Chhak on National Highway 143, a speeding truck collided head-on with the scooter of Karthikeyan and Vasanti. While Karthikeyan died at the spot, the female student sustained severe injuries.
The injured student was first taken to Lahuniapada hospital for treatment and later referred her to Rourkela. The accident site witnessed chaos as fellow students immediately alerted Lahuniapada police, who reached the location and seized both the truck and the scooter involved.
Investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
