NIT Students To Get Direct Admission For PhD In IITs

Students from National Institutes of Technology (NITs) could soon get direct entry into IITs in the final year of their B.Tech programme and take up research work.

A joint declaration in this regard could be made by both the premier engineering institutes soon.

The institutes believe that the development will enrich the research environment in the country and also help them both to boost their reputation.

At present, there are 31 NITs in the country and around 16 IITs.

IIT, Delhi will start the new policy from 2020-21 academic year, The Print reported.

The new admission process as explained by the director V Ramagopal Rao is as follows:

  • An NIT student will have to clear the interview stage to join the final year in IIT.
  • The student should have a CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 8 by the end of his/her third year to be able to sit for the interview.
  • Soon after completing the final year, the student can directly take admission in PhD without having to secure a GATE score.

“The idea behind getting NIT students into IIT is to improve the research culture. We want students who have the potential for research to join our institute. The NITs will also benefit because their students will get direct admission in PhD,” IIT, Delhi registrar Sandeep Chatterjee was quoted by The Print as saying.

The final year in IIT will mostly be devoted to project work or completion of six months of the semester period.
