NITs Asked To Fill Up Vacant Teaching Posts By Year End

New Delhi: The National Institute of Technolgy (NITs) have been given the December 2019 deadline to fill up 2200 faculty posts.

Chairing a meeting of the council of the 28 NITs here on Wednesday, Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank asked the institute heads, which included  NIT Rourkela, to expedite the recruitment process and complete the task by December 2019, a government statement said.

Shortage of faculty prominently figured during the meeting of the council, amid fears that teacher shortage was hampering the institutes from getting a better ranking in national and international surveys.

The statement said in-principal approval was given for the implementation of ‘tenure track system’ for faculty recruitment. This system entails a careful, strict selection policy, directed towards attracting extremely talented researchers.

The council also decided to accept the tuition fee waiver proposal for the SC, ST, physically challenged students pursuing M.Tech in NITs and in Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, West Bengal.

IIEST chairperson was also present at the meeting.

The NITs also decided to focus on new and emerging disciplines. They include artificial intelligence; research in ethics in technology; research in artificial intelligence and robotics for humanities; developing technologies for recycling of waste for useful applications; cyber security for sustained efforts & focus; climate disaster resilience, urban risk reduction; aerospace etc.
