Hyderabad: The Nizamabad Parliamentary constituency in Telangana set a record on Monday, with 242 nominations being filed for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.
The record number of nominations are from farmers who are protesting the failure of both state and central governments to ensure better remuneration of their produce.
Chief Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha is seeking re-election from the seat.
On the last day of filing of nominations on Monday, dozens of turmeric and red sorghum farmers were seen standing in the queue outside the office of Returning Officer to submit their nomination papers as Independent candidates.
If indeed all the nominations are accepted, the Election Commission would be bound to hold the elections in the constituency through ballot papers. An EVM machine can have the names of 16 candidates and if the number goes beyond that, a second machine is linked to the control unit.
