Bhubaneswar: In a relief for fish lovers, the Odisha Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister, Pradeep Maharathy on Tuesday informed that the cancer-causing chemical formalin is not found in fish brought from Andhra Pradesh.
Replying to a question in the State Assembly, Maharathy said that formalin is not used in the fish that comes from Andhra Pradesh. Fish samples collected from markets in different parts of the state such as Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Balasore and Rourkela were tested in the laboratory and found free of the harmful chemical that is used to preserve dead bodies in mortuaries to prevent their rotting.
The Odisha Government had formed a special team to examine the stock brought from Andhra Pradesh following a 10-day ban imposed by the Assam Government on import of fish from the southern state.
