Mumbai: While Suriya’s latest release ‘Karuppu’ continues to perform well at the box office, the film has sparked controversy over a scene that reportedly references legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and his ongoing copyright-related disputes.

After facing criticism on social media, the film’s production team issued a public apology, stating that there was no intention to hurt sentiments or disrespect the legend.

The makers assured that the controversial segment will be modified or removed from upcoming screenings and future versions of the film.

The makers further clarified that the mention of Ilaiyaraaja in ‘Karuppu’ was purely coincidental and was included only to communicate the intended message within the scene.

In their statement, the team paid tribute to the legendary composer’s immense contribution to Indian music, describing him as a musical icon who has dominated the industry for over five decades.

“Dream Warrior Pictures wishes to express its sincere respect and admiration for Maestro Mr. Ilaiyaraaja and his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and music, which has inspired generations and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences across the world. We understand that a particular dialogue appearing in Karuppu has caused concern and has upset him. We sincerely regret that the dialogue has resulted in such sentiments. There was absolutely no intention to offend, hurt, or disrespect Mr. Ilaiyaraaja, his contribution, or his rights in any manner. The reference formed part of a broader satirical context and was not conceived as a personal remark directed at him,” the statement read.

Controversy erupted after audiences spotted a humorous scene featuring the iconic track ‘Poradada’ from the 1985 film ‘Alai Osai’.

Soon after the song is played, a dialogue in the film appears to take a dig at Ilaiyaraaja and his long-running legal actions against unauthorised use of his music in films and stage shows.

The sequence sparked backlash on social media, with several fans of the legendary composer criticising the makers for allegedly mocking his battle for copyright protection and creative ownership.

Notably, this latest controversy comes shortly after ‘Karuppu’ ran into unexpected hurdles ahead of its release.

The film was initially slated to arrive in theatres on May 14, and the Tamil Nadu government had even approved special 9 am screenings in response to massive audience interest.

Reports also suggested that advance bookings evoked a strong response across Tamil Nadu and Telugu-speaking areas.

However, several early morning shows were abruptly cancelled due to financial and production-related complications, leaving many fans confused outside cinema halls.

Addressing the situation, producer SR Prabhu issued a statement explaining that the disruption occurred because of unavoidable circumstances.

The issues were eventually sorted out within a day, and the film finally hit theatres on May 15.

Besides Suriya, the film also features Trisha Krishnan, Sshivada, Indrans and Natty Subramaniam in prominent roles.
