Maruti Puts Brakes On Small Diesel Cars, Shifts Focus To CNG

New Delhi: The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, will not be making a smaller diesel engine, but will instead expand its CNG line-up.

Maruti retired its 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel after BS-VI norms were put in place. That engine was used in the majority of Maruti’s vehicles in different tunes. While other manufacturers such as Hyundai have upgraded their 1.2-diesel diesel engine, Maruti completely shunned diesel.

Maruti’s Executive Director Sales and Marketing, Shashank Srivastava has stated that less than 5 per cent of the hatchback market is diesels and the demand has reduced in sedans and entry-level SUVs, and hence there is no logic in developing a small diesel engine.

Currently, Maruti is offering the Alto, WagonR, Eeco, Tour S, Celerio, Ertiga and Super Carry with CNG options.
