New Delhi: A debate on the no-confidence motion against the Central government will be held in Lok Sabha from August 8 to August 10.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the Opposition’s no-trust motion, over ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur, on August 10.
Gaurav Gogoi, deputy leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, had moved a no-confidence motion on July 26 on behalf of Opposition bloc INDIA parties. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the no-confidence motion after it got the required support of 50 MPs.
Members of INDIA bloc made a two-day visit to violence-hit Manipur to assess the situation on ground. They met the Governor and visited relief camps in Kuki and Meitei regions.
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have witnessed continuous logjams over Manipur violence since the Monsoon session got underway on July 20.
The Opposition have been demanding a full debate on Manipur and a statement from the PM in the House.
The government, on the other hand, has been insisting that it was ready for a discussion on the matter and slammed the Opposition for disrupting proceedings in both Houses of Parliament.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar allowed a short-duration discussion on Manipur yesterday, but the Opposition objected to the short discussion. Protests and sloganeering resulted in adjournment for the day.
More than 160 people have died so far since clashes broke out in the north-eastern state on May 3.
This is the second time the Modi government will be facing a no-confidence motion since the BJP-headed government came to power in 2014.
The first one, moved on July 20, 2018, in Lok Sabha, saw the BJP-headed NDA winning by a thumping margin.
