London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared on Wednesday that the UK will steer clear of the intensifying Iran war, focusing instead on diplomacy to ease regional tensions and safeguard critical energy pathways amid worldwide alarm.

At a Downing Street press conference, Starmer asserted, “Let me say once again, this is not our war. We will not be drawn into the conflict that is not in our national interests.” He underscored that stabilising West Asia via diplomatic channels tops the government’s agenda.

Responding to US President Donald Trump’s recent barbs, Starmer hailed NATO as the world’s ‘most effective military alliance’. The Prime Minister detailed UK’s collaboration with allies to restore access to the Strait of Hormuz, a linchpin for global oil transport now hampered by the strife, vital for reining in UK living costs.

“The most effective way we can support the cost of living in Britain is to push for de-escalation in the Middle East and a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” Starmer stated, as reported by The Economic Times.

Britain has rallied a 35-nation coalition — whose members have signed a statement committing to work together on restoring maritime security to the key oil transport route — for Gulf security coordination. Officials from these countries will convene later this week to evaluate diplomatic, political, and navigational restoration measures for essential goods.

Starmer confirmed exhaustive diplomatic pursuits, including senior ministers’ engagements in G7 and with regional players. In parallel, he unveiled a forthcoming UK-EU summit to advance post-Brexit bonds.

“In a volatile world, our long-term national interest requires close partnership with our allies in Europe,” Starmer said, seeking a more “ambitious” cooperation structure.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will spearhead a dedicated conference, with military experts drafting end-of-war security strategies. Starmer called for “a united front of military strength and diplomatic activity” to rebuild stability.

These updates arrive against a backdrop of surging geopolitical strains and oil price surges from Gulf disruptions. Trump, via Truth Social, lambasted allies skipping recent Iran strikes, urging them to shoulder more burden for vital sea lanes.

Tensions in the region have escalated recently, with actions tied to Iran halting tanker movements in the Strait of Hormuz, which carries a significant volume of the world’s oil shipments.
