Cuttack: Hailing medical profession as a vow of service and a mission, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said one cannot become a good doctor until one becomes sincere towards the society with dedication to serve.
Addressing the annual function of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack, the President said no one can become a good doctor without commitment towards the society. Doctors, teachers and lawyers are regarded as ‘god’ by the people in rural areas, she said.
Describing healthcare as important for any society, Murmu said that with the advancement in medical sciences, people have been able to save precious lives.
Urging students to focus on research, she said that developing new medicines is as important as prescribing the existing one. Research would give a new identity to Indian medical scientists in the world, she said.
The President was happy to note that starting from a small Pilgrim Hospital, SCB Medical College and Hospital has become one of the leading institutions where people from not only Odisha but also from other eastern states come for treatment.
Murmu noted that the alumni of this institute are excelling in their respective fields and providing healthcare services not only in India but also in different parts of the world and bringing laurels to the country.
The President expressed confidence that students of this institute would continue to serve humanity and bring glory to the nation.
Murmu, who is on a three-day visit to Odisha, earlier attend the valedictory ceremony of 75th-year celebrations of Orissa High Court in Cuttack. She addressed judges and advocates at Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium. She also visited the Museum of Justice in Cuttack, which provides an insight into the history of the Indian legal system.
Later in the evening, Murmu graced the convocation of National Law University, Odisha, in Cuttack city.
Murmu was accorded a rousing welcome on Tuesday as she arrived in Bhubaneswar, coinciding with her completing one year in office.
