Mayurbhanj: At least three people were killed due to sudden Nor’wester storms in separate incidents at Puri and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha on Friday night.
Sources said two persons lost their lives while three others were injured as trees fell during extreme weather in Baripada city of Mayurbhanj around 10.30 pm.
A security guard riding a motorcycle died near Asanjoda on Kuliana road after a tree fell on him during the storm. Another person lost his life after his bike collided with a fallen tree at the National Highway 18 near Khunta on the Udala-Baripada road. The deceased have been identified as local residents Bamadas Hansdah and Nagen Murmu. The three other injured have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Nor’wester storms also proved deadly in Puri district with one death and several injuries reported. A man identified as Jagannath Behera died after a coconut tree got uprooted and fell on him during rainstorm at Alis village under Pipili police limits. Behera was returning home after attending a feast at the village temple. A bike rider has sustained critical injuries after encountering the deadly storms which swept Puri district at around 10 pm on Friday. Several houses were damaged with asbestos and thatched roofs blown away in the strong winds at Kanas, Delanga and Satyabadi areas.
