Noted Academic A Vijay Vishnu No More

Bhubaneswar: Noted academic Dr A Vijay Vishnu, who taught English Literature at BJB Autonomous College here, passed away recently, leaving behind a heavy pall of gloom in the teaching fraternity.

Vishnu (55) died in the wee hours of April 24 after battling cancer of the pancreas for the last one year. He is survived by his wife Alakananda Mishra, who is the head of department of English, Rama Devi Women’s University.

Soft spoken and affectionate, Vishnu was an erudite scholar and popular teacher. His mortal remains were laid to rest at Swargadwar in Puri on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of his brothers-in-law Satyabrata, Amitabh, Amalendu and Ajit. Vishnu was the son-in-law of renowned English teacher Late Dr Sadananda Mishra.

A native of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, Vishnu studied at Loyola College in Vijayawada and Hyderabad Central University before completing his PhD at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad. He worked as a journalist with Sun Times and OTV in Bhubaneswar before joining the Odisha Education Service and taught at Panchayat College, Bargarh; Sundargarh Government College and BJB College, Bhubaneswar.
