Cuttack: Eminent psychiatrist and former Odisha DMET Gopal Kar passed away at his residence in Cuttack following a heart attack on Sunday. He was 80.
Dr Kar, who served as Director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET), breathed his last following a heart attack at his Telenga Bazar residence in the city, family sources said.
He had also held the post of Principal and Head of the Psychiatry Department at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Born on January 18, 1946, Dr Kar completed his schooling from Ravenshaw Collegiate School in 1962. He obtained his medical degree from SCB Medical College and later graduated with a first rank in Psychiatry from Father Muller’s Medical College, Patna.
He was the first Odia to become the President of the Indian Medical Association. Recipient of many many awards, Dr Kar was also conferred India’s highest honour in the field of medicine, the D.L.N. Murtirao Award.
A host of dignitaries mourned his demise and paid their last respects.
