Bhubaneswar: While Odisha is yet to come to terms with the Balasore incident, Mahila Police in Sambalpur on Thursday arrested an assistant professor of GM University for allegedly sexually exploiting a female student of the state-run institute.
The accused has been identified as Gopikant Suna (32), an assistant professor of the Education Department.
According to sources, Suna had established a physical relationship with the girl student on false assurance of marriage. The 20-year-old girl, a second-year integrated BEd student, lodged a complaint with the police after the assistant professor reneged on his promise and allegedly mentally harassed her.
Suna, a native of Dahita under Buden police limits of Bargarh district, was staying in his official quarters at Professor Colony in Budharaja area of Sambalpur city.
In the Balsore’s Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College incident, 20-year-old Soumyashree Bisi attempted self-immolation in front of the principal’s chamber on July 12 afternoon when the institution failed to act on her complaint against her HoD Samira Sahu, who she alleged threatened to sabotage her academic records if she did not comply with his demand for favours. She sustained 90-95% burns and was admitted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, where she breathed her last on July 14 night after battling for life for almost 60 hours.
Incidentally, Soumyashree was also a second year student of Integrated BEd.
