The literacy rate in India in the age group of seven and above stood at 77.7 per cent, said a government survey done between July 2017 and June 2018.
The survey carried out by the National Statistical Office (NSO) said the literacy rate in the urban centres stood at a whopping 87.7 per cent, while it was 73.5 per cent in rural areas.
The figures reflect the big stride taken by the country in getting its populace literate. According to the last census, the literacy rate stands at 69.1 per cent.
According to the latest study, the rate of education in the urban areas stood at 57.5 per cent in the age group of 15 and above and 30.6 per cent in rural areas. All of the respondents had completed secondary education and above level of studies.
Nearly 10.6 per cent of the persons of age 15 years and above in India had completed graduation and above level of education. This rate was 5.7 per cent in villages and 21.7 per cent in cities.
