Bhubaneswar: The Centre has appointed Odisha-born officer Radha Shaym Ratho as the Executive Director (ED) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The appointment came into effect from December 11.
Ratho will look after the Financial Markets Operations Department, Department of External Investments and Operations, Legal Department and Secretary’s Department.
Prior to being promoted as the ED, Ratho was serving as the Chief General Manager, Financial Markets Operations Department in the RBI.
During a career spanning around three decades, he has served in financial markets, external investment and operations, banking and other areas under the RBI. He has also served as a faculty member of the Reserve Bank Staff College, Chennai.
The son of former Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University Prof Trinath Ratho and Sarala Ratho, Radha Shyam completed his schooling from Ispat English Medium School in Rourkela and Saint Vincent Convent School in Berhampur. He did his graduation from Ispat College in Rourkela and completed his Master’s Degree in Economics from Utkal University. He joined RBI as a manager in 1991.
He also holds degrees in Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science (MScs) in Banking and Finance, besides having earned professional qualifications including Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (CAIIB).
Besides Ratho, four other Odisha-born officers are presently holding top posts in the apex bank.
Shaktikanta Das
The Centre had appointed the Odisha-born Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer of 1980 batch Shaktikanta Das as the RBI Governor on December 11, 2018, for a period of three years.
The former economic affairs secretary was the first Odia to be appointed as RBI governor.
An alumnus of DM School in Bhubaneswar, he then did his Masters degree from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi.
Michael Debabrata Patra
Patra, who took over as the Deputy Governor of the RBI on January 15, 2020, for a period of three years, looks after the Monetary Policy Department including Forecasting and Modelling Unit (MPD/MU), Financial Markets Operations Department (FMOD), Financial Markets Regulation Department including Market Intelligence (FMRD/MI), International Department (Intl. D), Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR), Department of Statistics & Information Management (including Data and Information Management Unit) (DSIM/DIMU), Corporate Strategy and Budget Department (CSBD) and Financial Stability Unit.
Patra had worked in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a senior adviser to Executive Director (India) from December 2008 to June 2012, when he actively engaged in the work of the IMF’s Executive Board through the period of the global financial crisis and the ongoing Euro area sovereign debt crisis.
His book “The Global Economic Crisis through an Indian looking glass” vividly captures this experience. He has also published papers on inflation, monetary policy, international trade and finance, including exchange rates and the balance of payments. A Fellow of Harvard University where he undertook post-doctoral research in the area of financial stability, he has a Ph.D. in Economics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay.
Bibhu Prasad Kanungo
Kanungo took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on April 3, 2017, for a period of three years.
Kanungo, who joined the RBI in September 1982, has worked in several functional areas of the banks such as foreign exchange management, banking and non-banking supervision, currency management, government and bank accounts and public debt. He has served as the head of regional offices of the Reserve Bank at Jaipur and Kolkata besides holding the position of the banking ombudsman for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. During his tenure as Executive Director, he looked after Foreign Exchange Management, Internal Debt Management and Government and Bank Accounts.
Born on May 5, 1959, Kanungo holds a Master’s degree in humanities from Utkal University, besides holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
Shirish Chandra Murmu
A post-graduate in M.Sc from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Murmu is the Executive Director of the RBI.
A Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF), he has more than 27 years of working experience in the RBI in Regional Officers of Chennai, Kolkata and Central office in Mumbai.
He has handled diverse functions such as banking regulations, supervision of commercial and cooperative banks, currency management, financing of MSME sector, Financial Inclusion and Financial Literacy. Besides, he has also the experience of managing the Information Technology infrastructure of RBI. He has served on the board of Dena Bank as RBI nominee director between 2016 and 2019.
