Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly was disrupted on the third consecutive day on Friday as opposition members created pandemonium over alleged irregularities in paddy procurement.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, opposition legislators from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress were on their feet. BJD members were seen holding placards and raising slogans. They refused to take their seats despite repeated requests from the Speaker.
The House functioned for only for a few minutes before the Speaker adjourned it until 11.30 a.m. The ruling party criticised the opposition for obstructing proceedings, arguing that the government was prepared to discuss farmers’ issues, but the opposition showed no willingness to cooperate.
When the House reassembled after the adjournment, similar chaotic situation prevailed. Despite Speaker Surama Padhy’s appeals for order, BJD and Congress MLAs continued their prolonged protest over alleged paddy procurement irregularities. In a bid to resolve the deadlock, Speaker Surama Padhy has convened an all-party meeting.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who holds the Finance portfolio, is slated to present the state budget for 2026-27 later in the day.
