Bhubaneswar: Several heavyweights of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) emerged victorious, while some others faced defeat in the Assembly elections in Odisha as counting of votes neared completion on Tuesday.

As the saffron party put up a spectacular show in both Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in the state, prominent BJP candidates who won the Assembly elections included Bargarh MP and saffron party’s former state president Suresh Pujari. He won from Brajarajnagar Assembly seat defeating BJD’s Alaka Mohanty by 26582 votes, as per ECI data.

However, former Union Minister Dilip Ray, who contested as BJP candidate from Rourkela, was defeated by BJD leader Sarada Prasad Nayak by 3552 votes.

BJP’s Tankadhar Tripathy won from Jharsuguda Assembly seat defeating BJD’s Dipali Das by 1265 votes.

In Bargarh Assembly segment, BJP candidate Ashwini Sarangi defeated BJD’s Debesh Acharya by 4643 votes.

Similarly, BJP candidate Nabin Kumar Jain won from Titlagarh Assembly seat in Balangir district defeating BJD nominee and Minister Tukuni Sahu by a margin of 17,257 votes.

BJP candidate Sitanshu Sekhar Mohapatra defeated BJD stalwart Prafulla Samal in Bhadrak Assembly seat by over 15,000 votes.

Likewise, BJP candidate Dusmanta Kumar Swain won from Khandapada Assembly seat defeating BJD nominee Sabitri Pradhan by a margin of 7,120 votes.

BJP’s Babu Singh defeated BJD leader and Minister Ashok Chandra Panda in Ekamra Bhubaneswar Assembly seat by 4970 votes.

Senior BJD leader and Forest and Environment Minister Pradip Kumar Amat was defeated by BJP’s Saroj Kumar Pradhan by 2765 votes.

In Malkangiri, BJP’s Narasinga Madkami won the seat by defeating Congress’ Mala Madhi.

Senior BJD leader Snehangini Chhuria was defeated by BJP nominee Nihar Ranjan Mahanand by over 28,910 votes in Attabira Assembly seat.

BJP heavyweight and Speaker of the 16th Assembly Pramila Mallik won from her home turf Binjharpur in Jajpur district. She defeated BJP’s Babita Mallick by 2759 votes.

BJD stalwart Badri Narayan Patra defeated Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, who contested as independent in Ghasipura, by over 13751 votes.

Devi Ranjan Tripathy emerged victorious in Banki Assembly defeating Tusara Kanta Chakraborty of BJP by 16915 votes.

BJP’s Prashant Jagdev won Khurda Assembly seat by defeating BJD’s Rajendra Sahoo.

Similarly, BJP candidate Prithviraj Harichandan won from Chilika Assembly constituency defeating BJD’s Raghunath Sahu by 4566 votes.

Mangu Khilla was among the Congress candidates who tasted victory in Assembly polls. He won from Chitrakonda in Malkangiri district defeating BJP’s Dambaru Sisa by 9519 votes.

BJP heavyweight Jayanarayan Mishra retained Sambalpur Assembly seat by defeating BJD leader Rohit Pujari by 4059 votes.

Veteran BJD leader and former Minister Prasanna Acharya won from Rairakhol defeating BJP’s Debendra Mohapatra by 4960 votes.

Congress candidate Sofia Firdous emerged victorious in her maiden electoral battle from Barabati Cuttack Assembly seat. She defeated BJP’s P C Mohapatra by 7974 votes.
