Bhubaneswar: The ongoing winter session of the Odisha Assembly is most likely to be adjourned sine die on Thursday or Friday, sources said.

The session, which began on October 13, was to end on December 19.

The leader of Opposition Pradipta Nayak raised this apprehension over an earlier end to the session during zero hour on Wednesday. Nayak said the state government had hinted that it had no more legislative business for discussion in the Assembly.

“Did the government have no information about the number of legislative business to be discussed in the House and the total number of workdays prior to notifying the winter session? Is the question-hour session not part of the business? There are thousands of questions which remain to be answered. Why is the government reluctant to participate?” he asked.

Alleging that the state government is deliberately trying to cut short the discussion on the demand for grants, he pointed out that discussions and debates in the House and the reaction of the government are the basic tenets of democracy. “Sadly, this government is not maintaining these democratic norms,” he added.

The leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Narasingha Mishra wondered as to why the state government was in a hurry to suspend the House sine die much ahead of its schedule.

“When the government’s stand is not clear on a host of issues like atrocities on women, murder, gross irregularities in paddy procurement, KALIA beneficiaries, dubious announcement by the minsters in and outside the Assembly, compensation to the duped chit fund investors, and gross irregularities in the disbursement of houses to the beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), on whose interest the attempt is being made to adjourn the House sine die ahead of its schedule?” Mishra asked.
