Bhubaneswar: Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Jagannath Bidyadhar Mohapatra was given the additional charge of the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Monday.
The 1985-batch officer, who was selected as a CBDT member on May 27, took over the additional charge after the end of the extended tenure of incumbent chairman PC Mody.
“It has been decided with the approval of the competent authority that Jagannath Bidyadhar Mohapatra shall discharge the duties and responsibilities of the post of Chairman, CBDT in addition to his own duties for a period of three months or till the appointment of a regular Chairman, whichever is earlier,” the Finance Ministry said in an order.
The Odisha-born IRS officer may be appointed as the regular CBDT chairman in the coming days by the Prime Minister-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), NDTV reported quoting unnamed official sources.
Mohapatra, along with his two IRS batchmates Anu J Singh and Anuja Sarangi, was appointed to the CBDT only a few days back on May 27. His service ends in April 2022.
Prior to this appointment, he was serving as the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region.
