Bhubaneswar: In a significant boost to Odisha’s public transport network, the state Cabinet on Friday approved the ambitious ‘Atal Bus Stand (ABS)’ scheme with a total outlay of Rs 3,400 crore spread till the 2031-32 financial year.

The initiative aims to modernise, renovate, operate, and manage bus stands across the state, creating world-class facilities at district headquarters, sub-divisional and block headquarters, urban local bodies, as well as key tourist and strategic locations.

The scheme seeks to bring all public bus stands in Odisha under a unified management framework for consistent development and operations. This will encompass existing stands developed under previous initiatives as well as those managed by Urban Local Bodies, ensuring uniform standards in infrastructure, maintenance, passenger amenities, and services statewide. “Bus stands included in the “Atal Bus Stand” scheme will be officially designated and notified as Public Transport Infrastructure to be used both by Government and Private Bus Operators for integrated public service and convenience,” an official release said.

Bus stands will be categorised into “A”, “B”, and “C” classes based on passenger footfall, transport demand, and regional significance. This tiered approach will allow for customised facilities and targeted investments tailored to local needs, optimising resource allocation.

Emphasising passenger convenience, financial sustainability, and environmental responsibility, the project focuses on enhancing operational efficiency, revenue generation through commercial spaces, and reducing long-term liabilities. It also prioritises eco-friendly designs, such as green infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy integration, while promoting inclusive growth and better connectivity to support the state’s economic development.

The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC), under the Commerce and Transport Department, will implement the scheme. All included bus stands will be notified as vital public transport infrastructure, open for use by both government and private operators to ensure seamless, integrated services.
