Bhubaneswar: Odisha Cabinet on Monday decided to recommend to the Governor for dissolution of 16th Legislative Assembly, a day before the counting of votes for the twin elections held in the state.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the state Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar, official sources said.
The last cabinet meeting of the fifth term of the BJD government was held on virtual mode. The main agenda of the cabinet meeting was to recommend the dissolution of Legislative Assembly after the election process is over.
It was decided that the Governor would be informed about the completion of the BJD government’s tenure and recommend dissolution of the Assembly.
It is a formality mandatorily done before the declaration of election results. The state assembly is set to complete its five years term.
Election for the 147-member Assembly was held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls in four phases between May 13 and June 1 in the state.
According to the constitutional provision, the state cabinet will pass a resolution to dissolve the assembly after the declaration of election results, and hand over resignation of the cabinet and chief minister to the Governor to make way for the constitution of the new assembly.
The assembly will stand dissolved only after approval and notification of the Governor.
