Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is stated to have made a significant headway towards resolving the Mahanadi River water dispute with Chhattisgarh through dialogue.
In a fresh development, Water Resources Secretaries of both the states are likely to meet in New Delhi on Saturday to continue discussions on the Mahanadi water issue.
Official sources said Odisha’s Development Commissioner and Water Resources Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg is scheduled to visit the national capital to attend the meeting.
Notably, both states held high-level talks on Mahanadi water sharing on August 30, involving the Chief Secretaries and senior Water Resources officials. During the discussions, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a mutually beneficial resolution through constructive dialogue.
In September, Weekly Technical Committee meetings led by the respective Engineers-in-Chief were held to deliberate on critical issues and outline a potential institutional framework for sustained coordination.
A review meeting involving Chief Secretaries and Water Resources Secretaries was planned for October, paving the way for further discussions.
Officials said that the Chief Ministers of both states may convene a meeting by December this year to assess progress and explore a long-term, sustainable solution to the inter-state water dispute.
