Bhubaneswar: The Congress on Tuesday demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of Kabira Bhoi, whose ailing wife died at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack two days ago after being brought her in a trolley rickshaw from Satyabadi in Puri district.
Talking to the media after meeting the family members of Bhoi at his village Dasabidyadharpur, senior Congress leader and former Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Prasad Harichandan came down heavily on the poor healthcare service in the state.
“The Chief Minister is responsible for the crumbling healthcare service in Odisha as as Bhoi’s wife died due to medical negligence. As the state government has failed to provide emergency medical service to a poor family, we demand an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh to the bereaved family and a high-level probe by the additional chief secretary, Health, into the incident,” he said.
Terming the death as a gross violation of human rights, Harichandan said that Congress will take up the matter with Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) with a request to direct the state government to provide an additional compensation of Rs 50 lakh.
