Jharsuguda: A constable of the Armed Police Reserve (APR) was arrested and forwarded to court on Sunday for attempting to murder his second wife.
According to a police complaint filed by the woman’s family, Alekh Rohidas (29), a native of Jharamunda village of Laikera police limits had married the woman of Bareipali area in Sambalpur district last year without informing her that he was already married.
Soon after the marriage, his first wife and in-law members began to torture his second wife mentally and physically. As she could not bear the torture, she was staying at her paternal house.
On Friday, Alekh came to his second wife’s paternal house at Bareipali and attacked her with a wooden shaft and an iron pipe. As she shouted for help, the locals rushed to the place.
They rescued the woman, who had sustained multiple injuries from Alekh’s clutches and admitted her to the district headquarters hospital. Later, as her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla.
Following a complaint lodged by her family members, the Mahila Police arrested Alekh and forwarded him to the court. They have also recommended to the district SP for a departmental probe against the accused.
