Jajpur: People solemnising their marriages during COVID have been setting examples by making donations. A couple in this district in Odisha went a step ahead and devoted the wedding day to distributing face masks and sanitisers.
Sangram Keshari Sahu of Bijharpur used to take a keen interest in social service during his college days. “I along with my friends used to distribute relief among needy people during natural calamities and organise blood donation camps. It not only gave us the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile but also made us aware of our responsibility towards society,” said Sangram.
When Sangarm’s family decided to perform his marriage, he was apprehensive about holding the reception due to the prevailing COVID pandemic. In consultation with his would-be wife Truptimayee Das, he decided to make the day memorable by contributing to the fight against the pandemic.
Soon after their marriage, the couple went to the community health centre at Binjharpur carrying face masks and sanitisers in several baskets. Accompanied by some volunteers, they distributed them among the people.
They also tried to convinced the people about the importance of wearing masks, cleaning hands with sanitisers and following the COVID protocols to fight the pandemic with the possibility of a third wave almost certain.
“Today is an important day for us as we are entering a new life. We thought of doing something good for the people before starting the marital life so that we can have their blessings. Instead of spending unnecessarily on lavish affairs during weddings, I think people should come forward to help each other,” said Truptimayee
